Overview: At the close of the 1930s, American railroads were steaming forward with a wave of improvements to the passenger experience. Lightweight coaches, streamlined designs, and new forms of locomotive propulsion were fast revolutionizing the industry. In some cases, legacy steam locomotives were also upgraded to meet these new design standards. Between 1940 and 1941, four Pennsylvania Railroad K4 Pacifics received modern streamlined shrouding developed by acclaimed Art Deco designer, Raymond Loewy. The locomotives would spend almost a decade wearing this striking appearance as they traversed the PRR system in express passenger service.
